MadeinMycountry Greek (Eastern) Orthodox churches

Greek Orthodox Church (Greek: Ἑλληνορθόδοξη Ἐκκλησία, (Ellinorthódoxi Ekklisía), is any of three classes of Christian churches, each associated in some way with Greek Christianity, Levantine Arabic-speaking Christians or more broadly the rite used in the Greek Byzantine Empire

The broader meaning refers to “the entire body of Orthodox (Chalcedonian) Christianity, sometimes also called ‘Eastern Orthodox’, ‘Greek Orthodox’, or generally ‘the Greek Church’.

A second, narrower meaning refers to “any of several independent churches within the worldwide communion of [Eastern] Orthodox Christianity that retain the use of the Greek language in formal ecclesiastical settings”. In this sense, the Greek Orthodox Churches are the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and its dependencies, the Patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem, the Church of Greece and the Church of Cyprus.

The third meaning refers to the Church of Greece, an Eastern Orthodox Church operating within the modern borders of Greece.

Historically, the term “Greek Orthodox” has been used to describe all Eastern Orthodox churches, since the term “Greek” can refer to the heritage of the Byzantine Empire.

During the first eight centuries of Christian history, most major intellectual, cultural, and social developments in the Christian Church took place in the Byzantine Empire or its sphere of influence, where the Greek language was spoken and used for most theological writings.

The empire’s capital, Constantinople, was an early important center of Christianity, and its liturgical practices, traditions, and doctrines were gradually adopted throughout Eastern Orthodoxy, still providing the basic patterns of contemporary Orthodoxy.

Thus, Eastern Orthodox came to be called “Greek” Orthodox in the same way that Western Christians came to be called “Roman” Catholic. However, the appellation “Greek” was abandoned recently by the Slavic and other Eastern Orthodox churches.

Thus, by the early 21st century, generally only those churches most closely tied to Greek or Byzantine culture and ethnicity around the world, were called “Greek Orthodox” in common parlance.

MadeinMycountry Africa

Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent after Asia. At about 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, it covers 20% of Earth’s land area and 6% of its total surface area. With nearly 1.4 billion people, it accounts for about 18% of the world’s human population. Africa’s population is the youngest among all the continents. Average age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4. Based on 2024 projections, Africa’s population will reach 3.8 billion people by 2099.

Africa is the ‘cradle of humankind’. Fossils found in Africa, show that human beings and their closest relatives the gorilla and chimpanzees were born and evolved in Africa.

There are 54 countries in Africa today, according to the United Nations. Africa is the second largest continent in the world. Africa is home to the world’s largest desert and home of the world’s longest river: The Nile. Most of the world’s diamonds come from Africa (around 95% as well as 50% of the world’s gold) and it produces 70% of the world’s cocoa beans!

The continent has up to 90 percent of the world’s chromium and platinum. The largest reserves of cobalt, diamonds, platinum and uranium in the world are in Africa. It holds 65 per cent of the world’s arable land and ten percent of the planet’s internal renewable fresh water source.

Africa, the second-largest continent, is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided in half almost equally by the Equator. The continent includes the islands of Cape Verde, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Comoros.

The number one reason for travellers visiting Africa is to embark on a wildlife safari or climb Kilimanjaro. While Africa certainly has some of the most extensive wildlife viewing opportunities and one of the seven summits, there are many other reasons to travel to Africa.

Visiting Africa for the first time is an experience beyond description. It is a continent brimming with magic – from it’s immensely beautiful and diverse landscapes to its cultural richness and life changing wildlife encounters.
